Reason mono phase: rack/mix mono fold, polarity, Combinator tips vs spectral phase repair
Reason Studios headphones and wide stereo racks can hide cancel. Mixer mono fold (Main Mixer mono / monitor fold), channel polarity invert, small clip align, and honest stereo FX / imagers come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, mixer mono fold, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights. Load PHIXER as a VST3/CLAP/AU effect where your Reason host path allows (not a Rack Extension substitute for polarity).
What Reason mono-phase failure sounds like
- Main Mixer mono fold thins a bus or FX return. Stereo reverb, ping-pong, or widener beds look huge in Reason headphones, then mono fold eats Mid body.
- Polarity never flipped on dual rack paths. Dual DI+mic into separate Audio Tracks, dual-cab racks, or parallel Combinator chains cancel until you invert one path.
- Stereo imagers / wideners in Combinators. Wide racks feel huge in Reason; phone and club mono fold thin the kick or vocal chest.
- Send FX without a mono proof. Stereo FX returns fight dry when Main Mixer mono engages.
- Fine in Reason headphones, broken on export or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Reason mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Engage mono on the Main Mixer / monitor path (or insert a mono-fold utility on the master bus). Toggle it; do not leave it on.
- A/B critical buses, Combinators, and stereo FX returns with mono engaged. Note kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo return bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass bus, vocal vs stereo FX return, layered clip stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on the master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Reason (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity invert on one path
Use channel / device polarity invert on one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel Combinator when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small clip / delay align (not Haas width)
Nudge the secondary clip or use a short delay (samples/ms) to match the hero. Do not use Haas L/R delay as "width" before a Main Mixer mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Main Mixer mono honestly
Mono fold is a check and a destination fold, not a repair. If mono kills the part, fix polarity and rack routing first. Do not "rescue" with more stereo imagers inside Combinators.
4. FX returns and Send levels
Stereo FX returns (reverb, delay, chorus) often cause Mid cancel when summed with dry. Mono-check with FX muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. Combinator and VST3 hygiene
PHIXER loads as VST3 (and CLAP/AU where the host allows) on stereo inserts like any Reason effect path. Prove latency/compensation with bypass A/B. Do not stack competing stereo imagers inside Combinators before a mono fold check. Format choice does not replace polarity or delay match.
6. Only then residual spectral repair
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, mono honesty, and FX hygiene, PHIXER can help. Prove with Main Mixer mono A/B.
Reason path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Main Mixer mono on master | Buses / FX returns hollow | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends |
| Stereo FX returns | Dry+wet hollow Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return lows |
| Widener in Combinator | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; mono fold proof |
| Parallel Combinator / rack chain | Dry + parallel cancel body | Polarity; align; simplify parallel |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in Reason, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / mono fold habit |
Reason checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a Main Mixer mono toggle
Make mono fold muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Reason headphones alone.
2. Audit FX returns muted vs open under mono
Find which stereo return eats Mid. Lower Send level or simplify the return.
3. Bypass wideners inside Combinators during the check
Prove the bed without imagers. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
4. Re-check after Combinator or bus rebuilds
New parallel racks and FX changes alter polarity and latency. Invert and mono-fold again after you commit.
When PHIXER helps in Reason
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo clip, stereo bus print, stereo FX bed).
- Polarity, clip align, mono honesty, FX levels, and Combinator widener hygiene are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B Main Mixer mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace channel polarity, clip nudge, or to rescue extreme widener settings.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when Main Mixer mono engages | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| FX return open hollows Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return | Dry+wet fold |
| Combinator imager huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed (VST3) | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono clip alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / clip choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Main Mixer mono auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously polarity, clip nudge, quieter FX Send, or bypassing a Combinator widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the song wider or "more Reason." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Main Mixer mono → polarity on dual rack paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest FX returns → Combinator widener bypass for proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
